Prosperity In Dundas:
In the 1830's there was a time when Dundas became the most important town west of Toronto, surpassing even Niagara. It was in this decade that they opened the Desjardins Canal and Dundas became the chief exporting center for the Guelph/Waterloo area. Alternate routes however, were built later in time which redirected the business to Hamilton, St.Catherines and Brantford.
Dundas, Ontario was finally incorporated on July 28th, 1847 with a population of 1925 people. The Collins Hotel was around even back then to join in the celebrations. By 1912 the number of Dundas dwellings had risen to 1000. To give a sign of the times: In 1916 there was a 1 cent sale to ride a Jitney Car from Dundas to Hamilton. In this same year an elaborate old fountain was removed from King Street opposite Sydenham Road, which is the present location of Memorial Square. This leads us up to 1925, the year that finally brought 4.4% beer to Dundas.
Today Dundas is a thriving town which still holds a high regard for it's heritage and community background. The look of the old buildings of king street, still marking the milestones in the town's past. A town with a strong sense of community, which is the cornerstone to this information directory. Take a look around the site and see what Dundas has to offer.
